Lizard King

I should preface this post with essential personal information: I like dinosaurs, and any news about new dinosaur fossils pretty much takes me right back to third grade, when I was dead-set on becoming a paleontologist. That being said, you can imagine my reaction to the news that soft tissue, including preserved cells, has been recovered from Tyrannosaurus rex. The discovery could shed light on the controversy of whether or not dinosaurs were warm-blooded, as well as the evolutionary relationship between dinosaurs and contemporary species.

For those who wonder how soft tissue like this could be preserved for 65 million years, the answer seems to be that the fossilized bone surrounding the tissue isolates the tissue from bacteria which would usually break it down after death. There are obviously more factors involved, but I encourage you to check out the Pharyngula post linked above for more details (and pictures!).

As for cloning – which I have no doubt will be on the minds of little kids everywhere – don’t count on it; recovering DNA from the tissue is extremely unlikely, let alone obtaining the complete genome. It’s important to remember that Michael Crichton only writes fiction.

Amazing...

...until I started reading all the comments over at Pharyngula. It's unfortunate that any well trafficked site posting about this discovery is sure to attract the attention of creationist naysayers. I usually love a good debate, but once these things get going both sides come across sounding like petulant school children.

The never ending bickering aside, however, this is truly a momentous discovery and it gets me worked up, too. Is it just me or have the last two years delivered a treasure trove of biological. athropological and paleontological discoveries?

naysayers

I actually thought of giving mention to the creationist view, as expressed by the link over in the Pharyngula comments, but decided against it. Debate over the interpretation or significance of a discovery on its scientific merits is welcome - the best science is often done when evidence is forced to stand up to the harshest scrutiny - but this attack starts from the utterly unscientific position of literalist religious faith.

naysayers revisited

PZ actually has just published a whole post about the creationist take, which points to an article about creationist attacks on Mary Schweitzer (the discoverer of the T. rex soft tissue).

wow

This is truly amazing. I only recently heard about this and am looking forward to seeing what kind of new information this will reveal.
